Application path · Master's / PhD
The doctoral (kōki) program is not a "harder master's" — by design it trains you to set your own research questions and carry them to publishable results as an independent researcher. So the real gate is often not a written exam but the supervisor's acceptance (受入内諾): finding an advisor whose work genuinely connects with yours, who is recruiting that cycle, and who will take you on usually comes before any test. Eligibility is more than "holding a master's" — a foreign master's-equivalent degree, a bachelor's plus several years of recognized research, or individual eligibility screening are all parallel routes. Selection centers on the research plan, existing track record, and oral examination (口頭試問), with written tests downplayed and external English moved up front. Working professionals can take the shakaijin track by reframing their on-the-job problems academically. From here you can move on to a JSPS DC fellowship, a postdoc, or employment under a work status of residence (Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, or Highly Skilled Professional).
