Undergraduate (EJU) — routes, the English prerequisite, and how EJU is used

EJU (the Examination for Japanese University Admission) is a shared test material run by JASSO — not a unified placement system. Each university and faculty decides which schools you apply to, which subjects they read, and whether interviews/essays/campus exams apply. This axis reads across EJU's structure, route splits, English-score timing, qualification screening, and systematic misjudgments.

At least three families: general admission (一般選抜), privately-funded international special selection (私費外国人留学生特別選抜), and English-degree programs. Foreign nationality does not automatically mean “international special selection only.” The real axis is whether you can complete the application and lock in admission before arriving in Japan.

Pitfalls / easy-to-miss points

“Can I lock it before arriving” is the key axis“Getting a result before enrollment” ≠ “no need to travel to Japan to apply.” Look first for pre-arrival admission entries; do not default to the hardest route.
Correcting the SGU/G30 misconceptionSGU is a MEXT policy (Top Global University Project); G30 is a historical brand of some universities' English programs. The acronym means nothing — verify whether it is English-taught, whether EJU/Japanese is required, and whether it can be completed abroad. Some schools forbid parallel applications internally (e.g. UTokyo PEAK).

EJU has no English, but many universities require English scores as separate official materials. The most common failure point is when the score actually arrives.

Pitfalls / easy-to-miss points

The biggest fall: when the score/certificate actually arrivesETS direct send, mailed TRF, e-delivery, TOEIC Direct Reporting — each arrives on a different timeline. There is usually no lenient window to “submit other materials first and add English later.” Read which official score form the target school needs first, then decide the test and sending — never the reverse.

(d) How universities use EJU scores (three uses — no cutoff lines)

Even schools that publish an acceptance level do not decide on EJU alone — it is combined with document screening and interviews. This page deliberately provides no copyable score band.

High EJU ≠ direct admission. At national/top schools, EJU is often just the key to the next round, with campus exams/interviews/essays/oral exams after.

(e) Eligibility pre-screening and academic-record recognition

The base is 12 years of school education (MEXT entrance qualification). A regular academic high-school diploma usually qualifies, but vocational/technical schools, some international schools, under-12-year systems, grade-skipping, broken enrollment records, or non-standard institutions must never be assumed.

Pitfalls / easy-to-miss points

Correcting the AAO misconception“AAO” is not a universal term. Undergraduate applicants more often hit the functionally equivalent 出願資格事前審査 / Eligibility Screening. The fatal point: many families watch only the “formal application deadline” and miss the pre-screening lead time — at some schools you can only apply after passing the pre-screen.
Last-minute preparation is high-riskWhat's often missing isn't a scan but the school-accepted original form/translation/certification/time. Transfer is not a universal “backup after failure” (not guaranteed every year, not all faculties, credits not automatically recognized).

The campus exam (独自試験) is a second gate each school sets by itself after EJU — subjects and formats (written test / essay / oral exam) vary widely by school and faculty [要確認]. The interview is the final gate on most undergraduate routes. Whether they exist, their format, and their weight can only be confirmed in the target faculty's latest admission guide.

Difference from graduate interviews: undergraduate interviews don't deep-dive a research plan — they read motivation, how you account for your academic base, and growth potential. Graduate interviews drill into “what and how you will research” around a research proposal — the preparation is fundamentally different.

Graduate (research student) — three statuses, how to read the application system, and selection typology

In Japanese graduate schools, a research student (研究生 / けんきゅうせい) is usually non-degree, non-regular status. “Accepted as a research student ≠ admitted to a master's,” and “residence status ≠ enrollment status.” Master's selection is run by each university–graduate school–major, not a national unified exam. The two entries that decide whether you stumble: the graduate school's official admission guide + pre-contact with the supervising professor.

(a) Research student / auditor / credited-auditor — three statuses

The most common error for international students: reading a Japanese homograph as the same-named system in their own language. A research student is usually not a “master's-course student” but a non-regular category.

Reading rules: (1) 研究生 is not short for “grad-school student.” (2) Enrollment status / course form / residence status / degree are four separate things. (3) When you hold both a 研究生 and a 正規生 offer, COE/residence cannot be assumed shared (UTokyo Int'l Cooperation: doctoral/master's/research-student each map to a different COE; entering as a regular student requires redoing residence procedures).

(b) The “fake research student” trap — full picture

Non-regular status is not a gray buffer zone but a space the MEXT 2026 notice actively polices (forbidding unstructured mass intake just to secure headcount, and requiring confirmation of necessary language ability).

(d) Master's selection typology

Kyoto tells degree-seekers plainly: eligibility/selection/degree-conferral differ by graduate school — check the target lab's site first. A “graduate-school tendency” is a trend, not a rule.

Read it in four layers: selection category (general/foreign/working-adult/special) → exam composition (documents/written/oral) → English handling (internal/external/waived) → whether pre-contact and document eligibility screening exist. Each layer can flip you from “can apply” to “cannot.” Even within one graduate school, different units may be oral-only, written-only, or external-English-dependent.

(e) Past papers and specialty-subject preparation

Past papers come via three official routes; English is a front-loaded screener. Just the key points here.

Three official routes for past papers: (1) direct download from official sites (UTokyo Int'l Coop lists 2021–2026 A/B papers; Science Tokyo publishes a 過去問題 page) — collect by major/round/year, don't mix; (2) reading-room viewing/loan at the office (Kyoto Letters: ~1-hour over-the-counter viewing of the last 3 years' master's papers, mainly in-person due to copyright) — no PDF online doesn't mean no papers; a friend in Japan can check; (3) partly public/partly not (online and in-person can coexist within one graduate school) — check the graduate-school page, then the major page, then email the office.
Pin down the specialty scope across three texts: the admission guide + the major's exam handbook + past papers. Especially in humanities/social sciences, don't just memorize names — see whether it's classic-theory Q&A / pick-one-of-two fields / proposal-linked questions / written-then-oral.
English = a common front-loaded screener. The trend is not “no English” but external English scores replacing part/all of the internal English (Science Tokyo 2026: in principle submit external English at application + set TOEFL DI code; Kyoto Mech: e-send + Test Taker Score Report; UTokyo IST: TOEFL before applying). Implications: (1) English often starts earlier than the formal application; (2) “just take it again at application time” is a frequent self-defeat (Science Tokyo: a late English score sheet cannot be submitted; doctoral applicants may even be unable to apply). Some keep oral/written substitutes, but usually require departmental approval before applying.

Research students usually get no credits/degree; “完了” at most marks the end of a non-regular research phase, producing no master's degree

Check whether the lab's 研究生 page mentions 学位授与/単位; if it says “usually not granted,” don't fill in the blanks yourself

A 研究生 offer = master's admission secured

Even after 研究生, advancing to master's/doctoral needs an entrance exam (UTokyo IST); at Hokudai Law, 研究生 is not a required precursor to the grad exam

Compare the 研究生 page with the master's-exam page — are they two separate systems/guides/materials?

High continuation rate = institutional direct admission

Even if many continue in a given lab/year, that's an outcome, not a guarantee (Niigata: usually advises 6–12 months as a research student, but with the supervisor's permission you may sit the exam directly)

Don't ask about past cohorts; ask first whether 研究生 is mandatory, whether a master's exam still follows, and whether the professor will accept your continued application

Becoming a research student first is safer than testing directly

Hidden costs = time/money/residence-period pressure + you still must take the real exam (UTokyo: 研究生 on “Student” status is usually up to ~2 years)

Ask what tangible gain (Japanese/proposal/coursework/papers/recommendation) the period buys; if it's just “get to Japan first,” be wary

COE/visa is roughly the same for 研究生 and regular students

UTokyo Int'l Cooperation: 研究生 and master's/doctoral map to different COEs; even if both pass, entering as a regular student means redoing residence procedures as a regular student

When applying for both, verify each COE separately; don't assume an earlier COE can be switched over

Post-completion job-hunting extension/designated activity copies the regular-student rules

Immigration's explanations of “post-graduation to grad school” and “continued job-hunting after graduation” often exclude 研究生/聴講生/科目等履修生 (“excluding research students, etc.”)

Mailing rules are not rhetoric (Japan Post has a same-day postmark cutoff time; Keio Eng: domestic “postmark by deadline” and overseas “must arrive by deadline” can coexist)

Misreading = instant disqualification. 消印有効 = sender's postmark; 必着 = arrival within the deadline. Overseas is especially risky

External score sending / English scores

Often independent of and earlier than the main flow (Science Tokyo: external English for master's is in principle submitted at application with the school's TOEFL DI code; Kyoto Mech: TOEFL e-send + Test Taker Score Report copy; UTokyo IST: TOEFL must be obtained before applying)
