Kosen Transfer · The Engineering Fast Lane Straight Into Year 3

This is an engineering-only route written directly into Japanese law. After earning a 準学士 at a kosen (a five-year integrated institution starting after middle school, with specialization from the lower grades), you transfer straight into a university's third year under Article 122 of the School Education Act—typically lining up with regular third-year students. It splits into 推薦編入 (weighing in-school grades and fit) and 学力一般編入 (testing written and subject continuity); since exams follow the line from your prior major into upper-year coursework, kosen students with a solid engineering base have a natural edge. Unlike mainstream routes such as language school or direct undergraduate entry, its starting point is narrow—you must already be inside the Japanese kosen system—so for most Chinese-background students its overall relevance is lower. National technical universities like Toyohashi and Nagaoka admit kosen graduates into year three as their core intake, and you can continue on into graduate research through an integrated undergrad-to-grad track. Your residence status stays within「留学」throughout, with the move up to university usually handled by an extension (在留期間更新), not a change.
