The certificate's yearly renewal and validity, the 100 km / 20% rule, receipts and reimbursement, night-bus condition, early-bird and coupons — cross-cutting points gathered as a read-only reference; amounts and distances per official sources.
- Fare cert renews yearly / has validity
- The fare certificate is issued by your school; its handling generally renews each academic year and it has a validity window. An old or expired one may not be usable, so before the travel season confirm availability, timing, and lead time at the school window. It may not make it in time right before an interview.
- Interview dates firm up (and shift) late
- Interview and info-session dates often lock in at the last minute or move suddenly. If you wait until a date is fixed to get the fare certificate or book an early-bird flight or bus, issuance may not make it in time or the early-bird window may have passed, costing more. Back-plan from the expected dates of firms where you're advancing — line up the certificate's issuing timing and each cheap option's booking deadline in advance. - Only over 100 km, ~20% offguide · confirm
- The JR discount applies to ordinary tickets where the one-way operating distance exceeds 100 km, with a ~20% off (2-wari) fare cut as a guide. 100 km or under is usually out of scope, and limited-express / reserved-seat charges are separate (normally no discount). Always judge distance by the official operating kilometers, not a gut feel from station names.
- Round-trip tickets end 13 Mar 2026 — then two one-wayas of 2026/7 · confirm
- JR Group ends sales of round-trip and consecutive tickets on Fri 13 Mar 2026 (announced 8 Oct 2025). The round-trip discount (10% off each way for one-way sections of 601 km+) is abolished at the same time. From Sat 14 Mar 2026 a round-trip or consecutive itinerary is bought as two one-way tickets (reserved-seat machines let you buy the outbound and return much as before). For the student discount, one certificate can buy up to two one-way discounted tickets, so a round trip still needs just one certificate. Round-trip / consecutive tickets bought by 13 Mar remain usable to the end of their validity. Rules as of Jul 2026; confirm the latest on JASSO / JR official pages.
- No receipt, no reimbursement
- Even when a company covers transport, you may not be reimbursed without the receipt, breakdown, and route. Rules differ by company — most economical route only, pre-approval of the route, a set form — so check the posting and guidance email first. Even a cheap student-discount trip can end up out of pocket if you miss the reimbursement rules.
- Night bus then a morning interview
- A schedule with a night bus or a long trip and an interview the same day or the next morning saves money but easily wrecks your condition. Don't plan on price alone — check whether there's a buffer to rest between arrival and the interview, and the delay risk, and keep the travel plan realistic.
- Early-bird / coupons / promos
- Depending on the section and season, an early-bird flight, coupons, a promotional ticket, a night bus, or a Seishun-18 ticket can be cheaper than the JR discount. But each has its own rules — you can't just carry over the JR 100 km / ~20%-off logic. Prices are a season-dependent guide; confirm the latest on each operator's official site.
- For transfers, match your name to official docs (int'l students)
- When a company reimburses transport by bank transfer, a transfer can stall if the account name or its romanization / furigana doesn't match your official documents (residence card, passport, etc.). If your home-country name order or an alternate spelling differs, use the exact official-document form on the reimbursement form. Also, your residence-card number and passport number aren't needed for reimbursement — don't write them unless asked.
